I think the question to ask is "How many young people today are discovering and revering Bob Marley and his music". The answer is possibly some but many many millions more are still discovering the Beatles. And generally speaking reggae has been supplanted by rap worldwide, which doesn't do much for Bob's legacy, impressive though it is.

I wouldn't agree with that to be fair, I think Bob marley is still very relevant and being embraced by every generation, especially with the state of the world now, also he doesn't get the main stream publicity as the beatles do..his songs, the message he sends resonate with so many many people not just because they are catchy but because of the words he preaches

"The Sex Pistols achieved more in their short time."

...

...

As exciting a band as the Pistols were, they did not have the cultural clout of the Fab Four, they did nothing in America and sold a pithy amount in comparison.

The Beatles ostensibly revolutionised music in the way it was made and in terms of content.

That's great that you have music you enjoy

But the greatest band of all time !

Maybe in your opinion.

For myself, I would put a huge number of bands in front of the beatles such as;

Bob Seger

Pink Floyd

Fleetwood Mac

Roger Waters (solo)

Frank Zappa

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The Doors

Little Feat

Lady Gaga

Even Madonna has huge influence and plays Free concerts to over 1 million in audience

The list can go on and on

Everyone is going to have their own opinion on the greatest band of all time. There are many candidates for that title. However, the Beatles undoubtedly were at the forefront of the changes in popular music and created a wave of imitators that became a tidal wave through the 60's and their influence is still relevant today. Pirate radio begat Radio One in 1967 and pop music became mainstream. The Beatles, after their simple catchy early hits, began to experiment with different sounds and effects, which took some effort with the technology available then. George Harrison began to bloom as a songwriter after living in the Lennon/McCartney shadow and it was a shame when they broke up, as there's no telling what they would have achieved. Maybe not the greatest band ever, but one of the most influential.

There are many great bands some of whom I like a lot more than the Beatles. But, I have to agree that as innovators and as influencetial as they were there is nobody who comes close. Their music still influences many musicians today and therefore their respective audiences. They remain as relevant as they ever were even if they are not at the forefront.

And for the record Im a Prog Rock fan and enjoy bands like Pink Floyd, 70's Genesis, Yes, Supertramp more than I did the Beatles. As innovative as they all were in their own right, none evolved and took the world with them the way The Beatles did.

Fascinating play, 'Secrets & Lies', on Radio 4 yesterday afternoon. Tells the story of Mona Best, mother of Pete Best, who opened the Casbah Coffee Club in the cellar of their home in Liverpool. Early acts included the Quarrymen. The rest is history.

Sorry but that makes no sense. The majority of their music is timeless and that's why it's still relevant today. If anything they were at a disadvantage because sound production and music technology was still in its infancy and mostly benefitted the bands that came after the Beatles.

"The Beatles will forever the greatest band of all time!

"

Surely that depends on your own personal tastes?

I accept that they changed music and I like a lot of their stuff, especially from Revolver onwards and there's no questioning their writing talent.

In fact, writing their own songs was one of their most 'revolutionary' achievements, because it was still unusual for bands to write their own material in the early 60's.

Indeed, as an example, of the 12 tracks on the Rolling Stones first album only the Jagger/Richards penned "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)" was their own composition.

Within a few years however the majority of bands, with the exception of the typical gooey, formularised, throwaway pop impresario acts managed by the 60's versions of Simon Cowell, were writing their own material.

Personally however, if I were asked to compile a top 500 of my favourite songs, the list would be far more likely to contain tracks by the likes of Motorhead, Metallica, New Model Army, The Clash, Rush, Bob Dylan, the Jam, or my personal favourites, Bad Religion, than any Beatles tracks.

This kind of “best of all time” thread is always subjective.

As a music fan I appreciate the Beatles and what they achieved but in many respects they were in the right place at the right time; in the early 60’s Britain was primed for a musical explosion just like the one in America started by Elvis and the other great rock n roll acts.

It could have been four guys from Cardiff, it just happened to be four scousers.

As a band the Beatles were trailblazers, the four of them created some memorable songs both lyrically and musically. Most of their individual solo stuff doesn’t compare with their collective output and you have to wonder what Lennon would have gone on to do had he lived.

I was born into a household without Beatles fans as parents… what were they thinking? That meant Motown was my growing up music…sonic invention, studio as instrument, great songwriting that also had a social conscience… The Beatles were OK, but nothing beats the rush of Motown and the need to dance…for me anyway.

I agree yes the Beatles were hugely influential and fantastic for their time, not forgetting all the other bands in the ‘ British Invasion’ e.g Animals, Kinks, Rolling Stones(who I preferred in my youth) etc.

Greatest bands is a difficult one, I came up with an idea that if you can name 50 quality songs from a band, and I mean ‘quality’ then could they be classed as a great band.

Already in that category both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones would smash it.

It’s only an idea.

Fifty quality songs? After The Beatles you'd maybe have composers and songwriters such as Burt Bacharach and Carol King but don't think many other bands could claim it. The BeeGees wrote many hits for other people as did Prince, but maybe not 50.

As an idea it assumes longevity goes with greatness, or vice versa, which assumes a short lived band cannot be great, which leaves many great bands out…influential like the Pistols, The Clash, The Jam. Political like Bronski Beat, Style Council, otherwise Nirvana.. so for me the bar would be much lower in terms of songs

But would it? Yes the actual amount when compared directly may be greater for those 3 but money was a lot less in those days and went a lot further. Wonder what the values would be when adjusted for time and inflation. Also don’t forget that the beetles song have been earning royalties for around 50 years now.

How many times did you see the Beatles to say this?

Their reputation was built on their live shows in places like the cavern and in Hamburg, where you had to be a great live band or you didn’t get second and third shows.

My dad, who saw many many singers and bands throughout the 50s and 60s always rated them as one of the best live bands he saw.

Also, they stopped performing live quite early in their career, when they realised the audiences were only coming to see them, not to hear the songs. I don’t think bands today would do that, they’re too busy raking in the cash.

A song doesn't have to be a 'hit' to be considered a great song. Apart from the fact that music is subjective there is also the issue of air play to be taken into account.

The fact is that the majority of people buy what they hear on daytime radio and sadly these days that excludes genres like punk, heavy metal and rock. Therefore, bands that play music of those genres struggle to get airplay.

To give an illustration of how times have changed, take The Jam's Going Underground. It received airplay and went straight to number 1.

It was a song with biting political comment ...

"You choose your leaders and place your trust

As their lies wash you down and their promises rust

And you'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns

And the public wants what the public gets

But I don't get what this society wants, I'm going underground"

These days a band like The Jam would struggle to even get a record deal never mind have their music played on daytime radio!
