Most things were okay as far as I recall. The mashed potato could be lumpy but sponge pudding & custard, and similar, were always well received.

I think I liked spam fritters as well, and although unhealthy by today's standards we'd always run it off.

Yeah mainly positive experiences, although probably some of the fare would be judged to be unhealthy by today’s standards eg jam roly poly and custard!

I was born late 1957 so my schooling ran from about 1962/3 to 1974. During that period I don't remember having pasta once, I'm not sure it was available apart from tinned spaghetti, which I occasionally had at home.

Went to an all boys school so school dinners as you can imagine were chaotic and messy to say the least!

Happy days…

Here, there or somewhere nearish March

Hated school dinners. Egg and cheese something inedible, boiled to death veg, lumpy mash, and peas that had a life of their own. My mate flicked a pea across the table at me and I flicked it back. Dinner lady saw us and made us both stand in corners of the dining room. In the days before pink custard and chocolate crunch we had delicacies like bees in the desert (semolina with sultanas). The most evil dessert of all was frogspawn (tapioca). It made me heave to have to look at it and I’m sure I turned a deeper shade of green with every mouthful I was forced eat - “You chose it (no I didn’t, it was the last congealing bowl left and nobody wanted a large helping) you eat it!” While everyone else had been allowed to go out to play.

I have never since had chocolate pud + chocolate sauce to match what the school produced. They did a mean roast potato too. It was a boarding school, so just as well the food wasn't bad - there was no alternative. Pity the rest of the experience was shite.

School dinners in primary school were basic but always nicely cooked, we'd all go back for "overs". If anyone hadn't cleaned their plate, cook would be out of the kitchen, hands on hips demanding to know why. Happy days of the 1960's. 😁

Mrs M the school cook. I had a bit of a fling with her son. In some derelict pigsty and my dad's shed in the garden. Always up for seconds unfortunately he decided he was straight. To the best of my knowledge that is

Back in the 60s school dinners for me were the only main meal I got and to the best of knowledge were pretty amazing, I was never keen on semolina or tapioca though.

I have never had a school dinner. I suspect they are shit, but I have a four year old and the smells that come out of the school kitchen are pretty damn good, however they refuse to sample me.

At primary school I remember it was a great honour to be made a server on a table of 8 and prestigious if one of the teachers sat on your table : they had name cards and there was a scramble just before lunch started to get the name card for your favourite teacher.

Agreed. Also, I didn’t have a wealthy upbringing - school dinners were an essential part of my food intake for the day.

Yes. I also wasn't wealthy, so school dinners were also an essential part of my day too.

Hated school dinners at primary school. Made to eat prunes and custard the thought of prunes even now makes me sick. Otherwise the other schools were much the same seems they had a standard menu. Loved Manchester tart. Had an occasion to go into a private school just outside of Blackpool. Was asked did I want to have dinner thought why not . So went into dining room choice of curry , Italian food, vegetarian option and around the corner a roast beef carvery help yourself with fresh veggies the carvery for me followed by a steamed pudding with proper custard. Now the other half lives

Varied from school to school. Was briefly as one state junior school where the food was awful. Some of the others weren't too bad.

Lived close enough for home dinner at primary school, then took packed lunch for secondary.

But did often get the pink milkshake and a quarter carton of milk to repeatedly thin it down to accompany the sandwiches and apple.
