The Chancellor in tears at PMQs

North London (outer)

Chancellor Rachel Reeves was visibly upset and in tears during Prime Ministers Question Time today.

Starmer's press secretary has released a statement saying Reeves is "going nowhere" and she has the prime minister's "full backing".

It follows a moment at PMQs when Badenoch pressed the prime minister on the chancellor's future, asking if she would be in post at the next election.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in No10. Wouldn't trust Starmer to not throw her under the bus to try to save his own arse. They must all be shaken by the scale of the back-bench rebellion.

Starmer and Co are definitely the worst. Bond markets are showing higher rates than when Truss was in charge. Bank if England Base Rates are not falling as quickly as they should due to inflation increasing and thus causing misery for mortgage payers. Truss wanted to grow the economy by reducing tax burden on companies and people so that people had more money to spend and companies more to invest. Starmer and Co have done the opposite and stifled economic growth and caused rising unemployment and increased borrowing. Sooner they are kicked out the better. Don't forget Starmer was elected as the man to restore trust and honesty well he has totally failed on that.!!!

What was the other political event at Glastonbury? Oh yes they boo-ed Starmer.

Back benchers finally evidenced a back bone. No doubt there will be some heads removed over this or rather "funding withdrawn" for the ring leaders, (where the whips can't blackm**l them otherwise).

Starmer has crashed the party.and in so doing they have upset the facade of democracy that the media are desperately trying to maintain.

God forbid we might even have renewed demands for proportional representation, and that would take years for the lobbyists to control, not to mention the additional millions it would cost to buy that many diverse interests!

Quite a lot of Red Wall Labour voters are wondering the same thing.

If the current chancers can't make a large and visible dent in illegal immigration, that's no longer a rhetorical question.

Labour is a clusterfuck. The Tories are done. Greens and LibDems have their hands over their ears on migration, and no economic ideas. Cue the only hope for a solution,,,and don't forget to call it populism. Populism baaaad, m'kay?

Saying proven fact doesn't make it proven fact.

Your ignoring the fact that we've had 14 years of austerity and our GDP still didn't grow.

Our infrastructure is crumbling, the government needs money and quick so taxation is the short term answer to invest in appropriate public services to get the economy growing.

Getting NHS waiting lists down and people into work

Getting transport working and cheap to get people to work and travel across the country in general to spend money

Invest in schools because without the young being highly educated our dotage isn't worth living.

You have to deal with the world as it is not how Maggie told you her daddie ran the shop.

Absolute rubbish. How do you think you will get what you suggest with Starmer. All indicators show their policies show falling economic growth. All labour can do is borrow spend and tax. Think about it this way if interest rates were lower the cost of servicing the national debt would be less and the saving could be used for the things you want. People would have more to spend due to lower mortgage payments. Business would have more money to invest. End result growth which would then increase more with lower taxation.

No thoughtful person uses one quarter as evidence for growth.

We need to wait to see what impact things like increased NI costs have on business.

The PMI index has been sub 50 since November. That's hardly a confidence boost.

Labour in power (thanks to receiving the endorsement of only 20% of the electorate) was always going to be a catastrophe, or, rather, a series of catastrophes. Predictably, the country now faces colossal challenges because of their absurd policies, and after only a year of this nonsense. We literally cannot afford this shambles.

Labour inherited the fastest growing economy in the G7, and the conomy with the second lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7. Predictably, Labour has swiftly taken a wrecking ball to that situation (one that allowed the Tories to reduce the rate of National Insurance by 4% before leaving office - a reduction signed off by the OBR). Labour must now raise taxes (again), and they must try to cut departmental spending. Their policies have already destroyed years' worth of economic progress.

Apparently Reeves was busy poncing off HBOS expenses, using the bank's money to "fund a lifestyle", with spending on events, taxis and gifts, while she 'worked' as a Complaints Support Manager.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves' visible upset in the House of Commons today, has been put down to a personal matter according to a Treasury spokesperson.

Despite this, her policies need to be under close scrutiny. The changes to the Winter Fuel Payment, which now only supports lower and middle-income pensioners, may leave some vulnerable groups without help.

Reeves' strict budget rules have also been criticised for hurting economic growth and increasing taxes for hardworking people.

The fact that she claimed £4,400 for heating her second home while cutting winter fuel payments has raised serious questions about her priorities.

A close watch on her policies and actions is essential, and the opposition need to, and doubtlessly will, intensify their scrutiny of her position in the coming months.

Her performance thus far has raised great concerns about her ability to hold such a vital government office.

Oh yes I vividly remember Mrs. thatcher winning by a landslide because Labour in the 1970s completely fouled up, rubbish piling up int the streets , the dead going unburied, the pound in trouble. She faced down the ruin caused by rampent trade unions and repaired the economy and won two further terms on it before handing over to another Tory, I wish to got we had Margaret thatcher in charge now !!

We've had more than our share of disagreements lately within the Forum, so perhaps we can try to keep the discussion respectful and free of ill-mannered offensive remarks?

I respectfully suggest that we focus on the substance of the argument rather than speculating about the author's credentials or background.

Let's concentrate on the content and engage in a productive dialogue, avoiding speculation or personal remarks. I'm confident we can have a thoughtful discussion in a courteous and respectful manner and I hope you are of the same mind too.

Thanks, BigDickEnergy. Let's take a look at some key areas of concern:- The rise in employer National Insurance Contributions will increase costs for businesses, potentially affecting hiring and investment.

The reform of non-domiciled tax status might also impact investment from high-net-worth individuals.

Furthermore, the 20% VAT on private school fees could put additional pressure on state schools.

Business groups have also expressed concerns that higher National Insurance contributions and workers' rights reforms could hinder growth.

Lastly, changes to Personal Independence Payments may affect vulnerable groups.

All of the above will certainly cause ripples in the economy, if not worse!

There are forthcoming hard times to endure!

Whilst I don't care much for politicians, I'd love to know which boneheaded halfwit thought it would be a good idea to reduce benefits to disabled people especially after the furore over the winter fuel cuts. Did no one in the cabinet have the balls to say Hold on a minute, what are we doing here? Does the entire cabinet have a tin ear? While Kier, Rachel Liz Kendall et al,believe they are always right i find it incredible no one offered advice to the contrary

Aye because pensioners have had it so hard being the only group getting anything like an inflationary pay rise since 2008.

Despite the poor buggers working to pay their pensions getting nothing of the sort, or any prospect of a pension when they retire.

"Chancellor Rachel Reeves was visibly upset and in tears during Prime Ministers Question Time today.

Starmer's press secretary has released a statement saying Reeves is "going nowhere" and she has the prime minister's "full backing".

It follows a moment at PMQs when Badenoch pressed the prime minister on the chancellor's future, asking if she would be in post at the next election."

I thought it was a sad sight, and no matter what her politics are, making the headlines because you are visibly upset about something is awful. I hope she is getting all the comfort and support from her loved ones and those close to her. Leave her politics for another day - no need to kick a dog when it's already down

I respectfully suggest that we focus on the substance of the argument rather than speculating about the author's credentials or background.

"Chancellor Rachel Reeves' visible upset in the House of Commons today, has been put down to a personal matter according to a Treasury spokesperson.

No it hasn't, tell me facts where the economy is going wrong

Bro all you've said here is, key concerns, might, could, expressed and may!!!

Give me facts hard cold facts "

BigDickEnergy, I'd appreciate it if you addressed me in a more respectful manner, without using colloquialisms like 'bro'!

If you're looking for more comprehensive or detailed information, perhaps you'd find it helpful to conduct your own research using reputable sources.

I've already provided some key points based on available data, but further investigation may yield more specific insights that meet your specific requirements.

"Chancellor Rachel Reeves was visibly upset and in tears during Prime Ministers Question Time today.

Starmer's press secretary has released a statement saying Reeves is "going nowhere" and she has the prime minister's "full backing".

It follows a moment at PMQs when Badenoch pressed the prime minister on the chancellor's future, asking if she would be in post at the next election.

I thought it was a sad sight, and no matter what her politics are, making the headlines because you are visibly upset about something is awful. I hope she is getting all the comfort and support from her loved ones and those close to her. Leave her politics for another day - no need to kick a dog when it's already down"

I agree absolutely G3vers, as you say politics aside, if the Chancellor is dealing with personal issues, she certainly deserves all the support and understanding she needs during her challenging time.

"What was the other political event at Glastonbury? Oh yes they boo-ed Starmer.

Back benchers finally evidenced a back bone. No doubt there will be some heads removed over this or rather "funding withdrawn" for the ring leaders, (where the whips can't blackm**l them otherwise).

Starmer has crashed the party.and in so doing they have upset the facade of democracy that the media are desperately trying to maintain.

God forbid we might even have renewed demands for proportional representation, and that would take years for the lobbyists to control, not to mention the additional millions it would cost to buy that many diverse interests!

"

We have a pm who actually listens to his mps and makes changes accordingly to their concerns and gives them a free vote, yet you don't think that is democracy in action.

Have you forgotten when Boris shut down parliament to force his no deal (because he couldn't be bothered) brexit through?

Starter and more so reeves both showed poor judgement in her being there in that condition in the first place.

Whether it was personal or from a toasting from the speaker is lmmaterial.

It proved one thing she is not the person for the job.

This was yet another bad decision on her part and she's in control of the countries finances.

The evidence to her mess up will appear in the coming months.

If she introduces more changes to grab people's money, it will smell of desperation.

Bond markets and their reaction will be important.

They haven’t forgotten

Labour inherited the fastest growing economy in the G7, and the conomy with the second lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7. Predictably, Labour has swiftly taken a wrecking ball to that situation (one that allowed the Tories to reduce the rate of National Insurance by 4% before leaving office - a reduction signed off by the OBR). Labour must now raise taxes (again), and they must try to cut departmental spending. Their policies have already destroyed years' worth of economic progress."

Latest story/excuse for the bank clerk's tears is that she had a heated altercation with Mr Speaker, Sir Lynsey Hoyle, immediately before the Commons sat. If that was the case then she should not have entered the chamber. Her presence wasn't imperative yesterday.

The Tories have raised taxes for decades. They just call it VAT. It's a great tax, becausem unlike income tax, there is no earnings threshold: it cuts into people below the LEL.

I completely agree with you Beefandfur. It does seem like a carefully managed narrative to protect both Starmer's and Reeves' public images.

By framing her departure as due to "personal reasons," it gives the appearance of a voluntary decision rather than a forced exit.

This way, Starmer can distance himself from potential criticism about his judgement in appointing her, while Reeves can exit with some semblance of dignity intact.

It's a classic move in politics, where the optics are managed to shield those in power, often at the expense of transparency and genuine accountability.

The public gets a sanitised version of events, while the politicians' reputations are preserved – a familiar pattern in the bizarre world of politics.

For those who like to mention Liz Truss: in 2022, the year in which Truss was briefly prime minister, the UK's Conservative government presided over an economy that grew by an amazing 4.8%. In that year also unemployment fell from 4.1% to 3.7%. Now, after only a year of Labour's frightening incompetence, economic growth has been decimated and unemployment is 4.6% and rising.

I support some possibly most of their policies, yes.

Except the markets said she wasn't.

It's the opposite of Liz Truss they started to go into turmoil at the thought of her leaving.

She's emerged stronger 💪

How do you work that out. She is so weak and her idea of economic growth is pure fiction. "

Because as you correctly pointed out yesterday and I wasn't on top of, the markets began to go into turmoil at the thought of her leaving office.

They have since rallied when her position now seems safe. Giving credence to that the markets think she's a fiscally responsible chancellor.

She emerges stronger making it more difficult for Starmer to sack her

Probably regrets lying on her CV to get the job now .... Skidmark-Starmer will shamelessly stab her in the back to save his own slippery skin.

Whilst there is a tiny element of truth in what you say it is minute. Money markets are still worse than Truss times and economic forecasts are diminishing by the day. The only certain things are increased taxes in the budget, rising unemployment, continued high interest rates, continued high inflation all the result of policies made by Labour.

Starmer reportedly (Telegraph) said today that she'd be chancellor "for a very long time"

Reminds me of Thatcher: "We have no plans to"...privatise water. Kiss of death.

But as I said yesterday they are higher globally.

We'll see what the data tells us when it comes through but Q1 was good

Uk was good in q1 2025 but only back to the level in 2024 when the election was held. April 25 indicators are that GDP fell by0.3%. ENJOYING OUR BANTER!!!!

"Oh to be a fly on the wall in No10. Wouldn't trust Starmer to not throw her under the bus to try to save his own arse. They must all be shaken by the scale of the back-bench rebellion.

Worst government in my lifetime of any party, totally useless. We are in trouble now, surely the country cannot contemplate another four years of this

I can definitely take another 4 years of this compared to 49 days of Truss."

Well said! 100 percent agree!

Seeing as it grew in Q4 and q3 in 24 can't see where it dropped by 0.9 from July 24

The City started to go into meltdown yesterday at the prospect of instability and more u-turns. Possibly out of fear of what incompetent loony Keir would appoint as chancellor if Rachel goes.

Regardless or your political views i don't think it's right or fair to broadcast images of anyone so publicly in distress. The pressure on that lady is huge, beyond what most people can comprehend. Being Chancellor is a horrible job being caught between those that want more and those who want them to spend less. She is trying against substantial pressure to do what she believes is right and break away from the reckless spending of past governments and getting little thanks for it.

Not a labour supporter by the way.

Some people are definitely jealous of pensioners having a good pension, maybe they should stop being losers and go get in job and sort their lives out, by the time I retire I will have good pensions due to army , public sector and now working for a good fair company who have a good scheme, I will still want my cold weather payment even if it means going for a weekend away as a treat for all the tax ive paid into this country over the years as and that ive served it, it is not a law that it needs to be put on heating as some people find warmth in the winter in other ways. The cold weather payments won't be available then anyway lol.

You pay to keep Granny warm.nthwirs nothing to say you should have it when your old. Theirs no pot with your name on it. It's more of a pay as you go system.

What you see as jealous others see as fair. They've won the lottery of life gaining from the post world war settlement that they want to take away from their grandchildren.

Ruled by rich octogenarians that are clueless in today's struggles

It’s been a triumph! The zenith of political might!

If she could shred £5 billion of the nation's budget and then have a fit of the weepies every week from now on in, just think how powerful she could become…! The Iron Chancellor… Somewhere between Emperor Palpatine and Judge Dredd…

Alternatively… you’re as mad as a hatter.

No place for faux emotion- it was all staged - if she can’t do the job (& we all know she can’t) she needs to step aside & cry in her own time - pathetic

Maybe her Ocado delivery was running late

Also interesting to watch Angela Rayner's expression during PMQ/Reeves tears. I suspect she is growing in confidence, maybe Labour will finally have a female leader. Looking forward to her facing-off against Badenoch. More feist less robot.

Angela Rayner as Labour leader and Prime Minister? Seriously?? While she's certainly growing in confidence, her track record shows she's better at playing the victim than leading. Her handling of controversies, like the tax evasion allegations, raises questions about her judgement. She's also been divisive, stirring up class tensions instead of uniting people.

As Deputy PM, she's had a platform to showcase her abilities, but her performance has been lacklustre. She's more interested in playing the partisan warrior than working to find solutions. Her policy stances are more of the same old Labour dogma, which has been rejected by the British people time and again.

Kemi Badenoch would certainly give Rayner a run for her money. Badenoch's got a sharper mind and a strong vision for Britain's future, and a far greater intellectual capacity. Rayner, on the other hand, seems stuck in the past, clinging to outdated and backward socialist ideals that have proven disastrous and fail the country.

It's time for Labour to choose a strong, decisive leader who is in tune with the electorate and can actually lead and unite, rather than aimlessly stirring up division, strife and uncertainty.

The tax allegations were just that - allegations. HMRC closed the case with no tax due

That would be great. Can't think of any strong, decisive, unifying, potential leaders in the party.
