Seeing as we're on a music kick.

For me, Levon Helm from The Band. Not only an awesomely vibesome drummer but a great singer at the same time.

John Bonham, very few could swing as hard and hit as hard at the same time.

Jeff Porcaro (Toto).

Richie Hayward (Little Feat)

And finally Michael Shrieve (the amazing drummer with Santana at Woodstock 69; his playing on Soul Sacrifice is just incredible)

Yes Bernard Purdue was part of the inspiration for Toto’s hit Rosanna, he took ideas from Purdue and Bonham to get that rhythm. Pocaro featured on drums on some 140 different recording sessions over time and big named artists as well. Died to young.

"Phil Collins "

Phil Collins's pop career was a shocking waste of Britain's Jeff Porcaro. He is (was now probably) a fantastic drummer. Crap singer but I guess singing popular shite badly makes you a lot more money than drumming brilliantly.

I'm a drummer and you sound like one too. I agree on kit size, and also that less is more. Simon Kirke from Free left a lot of space in his music and together with Andy Fraser formed a great rhythm section.

Ziggy Modeliste of The Meters (Cissy Strut) is another one who really plays in the pocket, as is James Gadsen, Bill Withers' drummer.

I'm actually a guitarist but rhythm rather than lead and appreciate a truly swinging drummer. Zig is another cruelly underrated player. Thanks for the reminder

Bonham a thumper? Listen to the bass drum triplets on track 1 of their first album, Good Times Bad Times, recorded when he was 20. Listen to the tracks on YouTube where they have isolated his drum parts, and pay attention to his hi-hat syncopation. From Wikipedia:

"A mostly self-taught drummer, Bonham was influenced by Max Roach, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. While he was primarily known for his hard-rock style during his lifetime, his reputation as a drummer has grown beyond that genre following his death. He has influenced various drummers, including Dave Grohl, Neil Peart, Chad Smith and Dave Lombardo. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as a member of Led Zeppelin. In 2016, Rolling Stone named him the greatest drummer of all time."

Charlie Watts once explained that, the drummer & the bass player should work in harmony. A good drummer knows when not to drum, lightly using a cymbal to compliment a well timed bass strum.

I now notice this when I see good live bands.

My top 6:

Mick Avory - The Kinks

Stewart Copeland - The Police

Clem Burke, Phil Collins, Ringo & Bonham
