Seconded.

Dianne Abbott receives more racist abuse than any other MP. There is a report by Amnesty International which shows that in the run-up to the 2017 election, over 45% of abusive tweets were aimed at Diane Abbott.

In 2024 the biggest Tory donor Frank Hester said that looking at Diane Abbott makes you ‘want to hate all black women’.

He also said the MP “should be shot.”

Our hurty words culture has got completely out of hand. I am absolutely no fan of Abbott's but if she wants to believe that racism takes different forms with different targets, and say so, that's fine by me.

And, anyway, isn't antisemitism a special sort of racism which applies only to one religious grouping?

"In an interview with the BBC on Thursday, Abbott, the first black woman elected to parliament, said: “Clearly, there must be a difference between racism which is about colour and other types of racism because you can see a Traveller or a Jewish person walking down the street, you don’t know.

“I just think that it’s silly to try and claim that racism which is about skin colour is the same as other types of racism. I don’t know why people would say that.”"

The TL;DR is that a black woman talks about how she experiences racism, and the white people in the party say she is wrong and suspend her

That isnt what she was saying though.

But taking your example here, Jews in Nazi Germany were identified by having their papers marked marked as Jews.

Those that managed to be smuggled out did so by getting false documents that weren't stamped as Jews.

This is obviously different to people with black or brown skin.

This isn't saying there's a hierarchy, just that it's different.

You could say that both Jewish and black people experience the same racism once they are identified as Jewish or black.

But people generally cotton on that people with dark skin arent white quicker than they realise someone else is Jewish.

I agree, and don't necessarily think she was being antisemitic. Blacks, Jews, and Travellers have all been persecuted over their race. There's no hierarchy, and I'm sure the underlying hatred is different in all cases. Racism is not about how/whether you identify someone as being that race. It's about hating them for their race regardless. Yes, some Jews managed to escape since their race wasn't etched into their skin, but Hitler still managed to murder 6 million of them in the name of racial cleansing nonetheless. Maybe it's even worse to hate other people when they look exactly like yourself rather than because they look different? Anyway, what do I know. Racism is shitty in all cases.

That was the point i was trying to make. Jews and Travellers have been persecuted for centuries years over their "race". Hitler murdered 6 million Jews solely over race. Arian race over the Jewish race. Humiliation, persecution, deportation, dehumanisation, and murder strike me as counting as suffering in the name of racism.

Well it comes down to certain groups of people (e.g. black, Indian, oriental) can suffer from racism in a different way to say Irish, travelers and jewish people because for the former groups they are obviously in those groups where for the latter it is not immediately obvious just from looking at them. Which to be fair to her is quite true.

Think about this could someone tell that you are gay or bi just be seeing you in the street in order to single you out for homophobic abuse, or would they have to get to know you first to find out?

That is the essence of what her proposition is.

I'm not a fan and she often comes over as a bit of a joke figure. However her constituents must love her as she keeps getting re-elected with large majorities so she is obviously doing something right. I've heard various reports about what she allegedly said. Whether these reports twisted her words or took them out of context I do not know for sure, but they didn't sound particularly racist.

Is Starmer launching a big purge of the left of his party in the vain hope of stopping his traditional voters switching to Reform?

No, it isn't. But that's not the point, which is that it while it was easy to identify some groups, it was no simple matter to identify membership of others. With some obvious exceptions, the Nazis couldn't just look at someone and say whether or not they were Jewish.

It required a setting up a bureaucratic machine that made enquiries about parentage and family history, the end result being the compulsion to wear a large yellow star displayed prominently on their clothing, so that officials and the general population could identify the enemies they had been taught to hate.

What she said isn't wrong. She's just being punished by a the labour party that are still trying to publicly project that they no longer have an internal anti-jewish problem.

They have difficulty dealing with any candidate with independent opinions. They will find themselves open to further criticism and internal conflict if they fully eject her from the party, given her long service.

The root of many of Labour's current problems is that their "leader" is not a politician. He's in the control room of a political machine, but the only controls that he knows how to use are the ejector buttons wired to the seat of each of his MPs. His other problem, of course, is that he doesn't think he needs to listen.

When Blair was in charge there was certainly no shortage of dissent, but he had his ear to the ground and a lot of ways of containing it. I have the impression that Starmer just can't be bothered with all that.

I think that part of the problem is that the Labour Party MAY have had a problem with antisemitism on the past (just as the Tory’s had with Islamophobia). But now if anyone wants to stir up trouble they only have to accuse someone of antisemitism no matter how tenuous the accusation is to get an over reaction.

From what I have seen and heard nothing that Abbot said was antisemitic, it just pointed out that some groups may suffer more discrimination because they are easier to identify because of physical characteristics i.e. skin colour. This doesn’t mean that some couldn’t be identified easily by religious dress, and they will probably be easier targets for discrimination than those not wearing religious dress. And no I’m not saying they shouldn’t wear the religious dress, all I’m saying is that it makes them a bigger target for bigots to identify them.

"I agree, and don't necessarily think she was being antisemitic.

Actually that 6 million were not all Jews - it included Romany’s and homosexuals amongst other groups in case you have forgotten or didn’t know. "

Approximately 11 million people were killed because of Nazi genocidal policy.

5 million of those murdered were non-Jewish.

Others were Nazi victims because of what they did, who they were, their genetic or cultural origins, or health conditions.

Some people were undesirable by Nazi standards because of who they were, their genetic or cultural origins, or health conditions. These included Jews, Gypsies, Poles and other Slavs, and people with physical or mental disabilities.

Others were Nazi victims because of what they did. These victims of the Nazi regime included Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, the dissenting clergy, Communists, Socialists, ‘asocial’s, and other political enemies.

"Didn't stop Hitler murdering millions of both groups in the name of racial cleansing. So, no, racism is clearly not just about the colour of your skin.

What she basically said is people of colour are automatically walking about with large yellow stars while the other mentioned groups are not.

But I guess people who never experienced racism are the ones to judge what people experiences are.

Dianne Abbott's political views are poles apart from my own, and she has made some unfortunate gaffs in the past. However, she is clearly a well-respected constituency MP and deserves to be treated fairly and respectfully, especially by the very party of which she has been a long-term, loyal, diligent and supporting member.

I think what she said was well-intended but unfortunately poorly phrased, and has been deliberately misconstrued by those with a vested interest in criticising her.

As a Corbynite, she's clearly out of favour with the Labour leadership, who've seized this opportunity for a witch-hunt to oust her from the party.

I'm convinced that if Angela Rayner had made a similarly poorly phrased statement, Keir Starmer would have donned his lawyer's wig and gown and stood firmly in her defence!

Politics continues to be the dirty business it's always been and best avoided to maintain one's sanity!

Waterlooville

As understand it, Diane Abbots point is that there is a difference between the "Racism" suffered by Black people and "Prejudice" suffered by others such as religious sects, minorities an d sexual orientation.

There is a law on the statute book called Hate Crime. The law states;

In the UK, a hate crime is a criminal offense perceived by the victim or others to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on characteristics like race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or transgender identity.

It seems to cover all categories but uses the word "Prejudice not Racist"

This is the definition of both words.

Racism is more than just prejudice in thought or action. It occurs when this prejudice – whether individual or institutional – is accompanied by the power to discriminate against, oppress or limit the rights of others.

To sum up i don't know who is right or wrong!

"At least it was never specifically a crime to be non-white in the UK, whereas for my early years as a young man I was at risk for committing illegal sex acts with other men.

Witness what they did to Alan Turing and others..chemical castration.

I can remember the appalling behaviour of the local police with their very regular visits to the crowds outside the Coleherne, and their mass raids with dogs, radios etc on Hampstead Heath

And then there was the ongoing practice of using "pretty policemen" for entrapment exercises in some public toilets

The list is endless, Britain should be ashamed.

LEST WE FORGET.

I may be wrong... bug I thought the use of 'agent provocateur' was illegal? "

No not illegal in the UK the use of agents provocateur for undercover surveillance has strict rules to follow. It needs proper approval, must be necessary and proportionate. There are extra protections for sensitive info and mistakes must be reported. If these rules aren't followed, it can be seen as a contravention of human rights.

Why is it shocking? And what exactly did she say that was antisemitic?

You can’t explain how it’s antisemitic though, you've just thrown the word around.

========================================

From the article:

"She wrote: "Irish, Jewish and Traveller people undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism. It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism."

In other words, she appeared to equate antisemitism with the prejudice experienced by people with ginger hair."

The problem here is with the "in other words" and "she appeared". These are doing a lot of heavy lifting to justify the action taken against her.

"At the time she withdrew the remarks and apologised and was suspended – and so sat as an independent MP."

Of course she did. She was subjected to an absolute shitstorm. And it suited Starmer to allow her to stand again. But the important thing here is whatever

your opinion of what she originally said, she paid for it.

But now she's said she didn't regret it, she apparently has to pay for it again to save Starmer embarrassment.

Read the BBC article. And her words are not cleverly chosen initially she appeared to say (but didn't actually say ) prejudice isn't the same as racism. Jewish people travelers , Irish experience prejudice but not racism.

She then shot herself in. The foot by saying having red hair means people may be prejudiced against you but that's not the same as racism.

Which could be held to imply that that antisemitism is no worse than disliking red hair.

She apologised.

Rightly so.

She now stupidly appeared to take back the apology.

She tried to clarify yes antisemitism is racism but she stands by her comments that because ethnic minorities looks different they are more consistently subject to racist abuse.

I think her initial comments were largely bullshit yes if you look different from birth you will be exposed to racism earlier and more often. And yes racism is different with different groups.

Her argument that it's more extreme than that experienced by Jews or Irish may be true, possibly even the traveler or Romma communities,

But they have more than simply prejudice to contend with there is an active racism that sees them as other and different in a degree that lets say red haired individuals are not subjected to.

So I don't agree with the initial statements in large measure. And here refined ones I'm not sure about.

But there is nothing antisemitic in her latest comments, and I think your being Jesuitical to accuse her of antisemitism even on the original count.

Yes, and she didn’t say anything antisemitic like you claim.

It’s clear you’ve just read the headlines, and in your original post you claimed she was spouting antisemitism, but when I and several others have asked, what exactly did she say that was antisemitic, you don’t have an answer.

Absolutely talentless, never had anything to offer hated this country and it's history, it's legacy.

She was fortunate to live in a time when you could make headway purely as a race grifter, and she played her cards.

Get this straight - criticising the Israeli goverment, army or Netanyahu is NOT anti-semetism.

It's what Corbyn did, and the right-wing of the Labour party distorted what he was saying, using it as an excuse to sideline him. They were scared of his progressive and inclusive views, popularity with younger voters, and many of us older voters too.

Many Jewish people are also critical of Netanyahu's genocidal actions. They can hardly be described as anti-semitic.

I fully agree. Netanyahu and his gang are a disgrace to the world, and being supported by the criminal Trump and by our UK government is just totally revolting. Calling Abbot antisemitic is just to draw attention away from the horrible Starmer who continues to support his Nazi gang who are murdering tens of thousands in Gaza.]

Diane Abbott, I believe meant well but phrased it in a rather clumsy way, and her critics are twisting it.

Because she's a Corbyn fan, Starmer and his cronies are using this as a reason to oust her.

If Rayner had said something similar, Starmer would've defended her, I feel sure.
