This is a great film. Funny and full of the joy of life. Most gay themed films were always so depressing and involved violence and were so bleak but this is loud out and proud. Plus it has a great soundtrack!

The peppermint foot lotion scene is a classic!

Terence Davies was a brilliant director and his films are beautifully shot with gay themes running through them.

Distant Voices Still Lives

The Long Day Closes

Also Maurice based on the novel of the same name by EM Forster is a good film. Excellent performances by the lead actors.

For comedy I love Victor/Victoria or The Ritz or the original French La Cage Au Folles (the Birdcage being the US English language remake).

I have a few favourites:

Priest, with Linus Roache as the priest who has an affair with Robert Carlyle.

God's Own Country has some great scenes.

The Danish Girl with Eddie Redmayne, a true but ultimately sad story.

Sequin In A Blue Room, an Australian film.

Men of Hard Skin, an Argentinian (I think) film has some good scenes.

Shank and the sequel - Cal, with Wayne Virgo, very gritty and a bit violent.

That's on the 'Boys on film 4' collection too - a collection of short films from independent directors. They are really interesting and entertaining, I believe there are about 25 of those 'Boys on Films' now.

Brokeback Mountain was a damn good movie too.

For the younger generation: 'Love, Simon' was brilliant, starring the very fit Nick Robinson

Earl's Court, London

I saw a really good Norwegian film yesterday, called just 'Love', which explores the notion of 'spontaneous intimacy' and sexual connections that aren't planned to lead to a relationship, but still are kind and caring.

One main character is a male nurse, who lives like that quite consciously, and the other is his boss, a doctor, who decides to see if something like his way of life might suit her. It is such a gentle and intelligent film. What I hadn't bargained for was that the nurse meets a gay man who is distraught that he is about to have his cancerous prostate removed which will leave him impotent and incontinent. I found it intensely emotional, but at least he has someone who wants to treat him with kindness.

I think the director's name is Haugerud, and it's one of a trilogy called the Oslo Trilogy, all about human sexuality. I saw one other, called 'Sex' about bisexuality, and it was also really good, but much more talky. I thought of mentioning it on one of the bisexuality threads, but decided against dipping a toe in those brackish waters!

Do look out for them, I think you'd find them really worth watching. They're in several cinemas in London at the moment. Don't know about elsewhere. Interested to hear others' opinions.

"For comedy I love Victor/Victoria [...]."

There is a fascinating pre-history to Victor/Victoria which some of you will know - it is based on the German film 'Viktor und Viktoria' from 1933 which then spawned a French re-make in 1934, 'Georges et Georgette', and then the first English re-make in 1935, 'First a Girl'. They make fun and informative watching. See the Wikipedia entries. What changes in Germany after 1933 ...

Chester... Where the streets have no name

Femme (2023). BBC2 Friday 27th March.

Earl's Court, London

The original 'Day of the Jackal' film (1973) had a fascinating key sequence to the plot, where the Jackal finds the perfect way of hiding out in Paris by picking a guy up in a sauna and staying at his flat. When he casually kills his host as he's preparing his dinner it seems particularly heartless.

It's pretty amazing to see gay sauna cruising in such a mainstream film back then, and presented quite non-judgementally - other than to suggest, quite reasonably, that you take risks taking complete strangers home for sex. Given that a woman who takes him in earlier suffers a similar fate, it's hardly a homophobic episode.

'Pillion' certainly needs to be added to the list. Excellent film. Anyone seen anything interesting at the LGBTQ+ film festival that's on at the National Film Theatre at the moment? I'm going to the Russell T. Davies talk tomorrow lunchtime.

I haven't seen 'Maurice' by Merchant Ivory for years so it may be a bit dated now but I loved it because it had a *happy ending*

The novel is better than the film they cut loads out of the film and it didn't really make sense if you hadn't read the book

Hugh Grant is particularly impressive he gives the character a clear arc between being happily gay at Oxford in the beginning but turning gradually into a priggish married closet case to further his political career
