"Who else , wants a farmer to use them in his cowshed? Not sure they are called cow sheds now , perhaps cattle courts given the massive sheds farmers have. Not many about though. Accurate " A cowshed can also be called a Byre at least in Scotland. Many farmhouses in Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire have them directly attached and there is a connecting door. Cows were milked in there. Dont think building/health regs would allow now. Membership of the EU killed off our small dairy farms so the houses and byres were sold and many people from down south are now enjoying the pleasures of West of Scotland farmhouses with byres attached !

The cows would be tethered round the neck in their alloted stall in Winter . Milked there, fed there , turned out for a little exercise then every cow would return to her alloted stall to bed down for the night after evening milking. Eventually welfare regs saw this done away with. The byre was a,warm , peaceful place full of the body heat of contented animals chewing the cud. A timepiece today.

" This is so true, the scene you paint brings back happy memories . Seen a lovely example near Darvel on my travels, from the byre you into an area with a stone floor and really big Belfast sinks to wash the milking stuff, then into a massive pantry/larder with massive stone shelves then into the kitchen with stone floor, 4 oven Aga, pulley on the ceiling and farmhouse table covered in baking. The pleasures of country life....
