Always difficult, like losing a family member, friend and loyal confidant.

It’s a tough decision, I had to decide whether to put my cat with leukaemia down or spend £400 a month on painkillers until she naturally passed.

Its devastating to lose a dog/pet, but sometimes you have to make hard decisions, and its better to do the job a week too early than a day to late. I want my dogs to die before me, and then I know what has happened to them

It's the only downside of having a pet like a cat or a dog. They have relatively short lives in comparison to a human life span, so on one level, you can rationalise that there will come a time when you have to say goodbye. It's devastating, even if you know they've had a long, happy life. They leave an animal shaped void in your heart. In time, you know you'll feel ready to take another pet into your life, but you never forget the ones who shared your life. As a cat dad, I lost one to being knocked down, and that was the hardest thing to accept. It was a tragic accident and she loved to be free outdoors (it's a quiet lane with lots of open countryside). Blamed myself for such a long time for not keeping her as an indoor cat even though I know that wouldn't have been the right thing. Have 2 cats now, the deceased cat's sibling and an adopted cat from a neighbour who moved away.

It really is the worst decision to have to make.

I’m answering this post but should not! I love animals and have now lost five rescue dogs! Three pedigree dogs and a horse! Can’t even explain the pain

The worst feeling of loss I have ever experienced. Bad as is sounds but for some reason worse than a family member.

The second last dog I had I had to get put to sleep because of cancer and I bawled my eyes out in the vet's surgery for 15 minutes before taking her home where there were plenty more tears. The last dog I had passed naturally after a long and happy life and I cried for days after her. I've another dog now and no doubt I'll be just as upset when she passes.

Ive had five rescue Greyhounds. Each a different character. Loved them all so much. Last one went in December. A Lhasa Apso comforts me now.

North London (outer)

Even worse these days, with many Vet's surgeries being owned by large American investment funds, preying on British people's love of animals. AI came up with this:

the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating concerns about overcharging and potential anti-competitive practices in the UK veterinary sector, with evidence suggesting significant price hikes and excessive medicine markups, driven by increased corporate ownership. The CMA is expected to provide recommendations this year to address issues like a lack of pricing transparency, inadequate provision of prescription information, and practices that could discourage price comparison. You can discuss your concerns with your vet, request a written prescription to buy medication elsewhere, and understand your rights under the Consumer Rights Act if you believe a service was overpriced or inadequate.

Key Concerns & Investigations

Price Increases:

Vet bills have risen by over 60% between 2015 and 2023, which is significantly higher than the rate of inflation or salary increases.

Corporate Ownership:

The CMA is concerned that corporate takeovers of independent practices could lead to less competition and higher prices.

Lack of Transparency:

Many vet practices don't display prices online, and pet owners are often not informed of costs before treatment, especially for tests, surgery, and out-of-hours care.

Medicine Markups:

Some medicines are sold at markups of 300-400% of the purchase cost.

Prescription Options:

A significant number of pet owners are unaware they can get written prescriptions to buy medicines from alternative, potentially cheaper, suppliers.

Had a giant rabbit who we got from pets at home. She was needing rehoming. She bounded down the corridor to us when we went to look at her.......she chose us! Gentle giant and loving.

Sobbed like mad when we lost her. Buried her in the garden with a stone headstone. RIP Magic

My little dogis 15 now, I'm dreading the day when it comes.

When it does, I;m having him cremated and have agreed with my funeral director that when I go, his ashes go in my box with me.

The only real friend I have.

Had a family cat in the seventies that had to be put down. I was six and devastated. Then later we got a Samoyed and it succumbed to parvovirus whilst still a pup. My old man said that was it, it wasn't. We got a cat that lived to 20 and a border collie in 91. The collie passed but gave us all lots of joy. My partner had a cat which I had to take to be put down due to cancer. Now we have two cats and know the inevitable will come but I suppose the joy that pets give us is worth it all in the end, even though it is a real heartbreak when they die.

Lost my pet bitch at 14.

So painful that I've chosen never to have another pet in 55 years rather than go through that pain again

My garden is a graveyard to many of my pets ,you know that one day they will die because of the relatively short life span compared to humans but it's still a heart breaking experience when it happens x
