Is 175 posts a suitable limit?

Yes. Stops things taking up space on the servers

Until they get more hamsters to run the servers.

But you can just start a part 2 thread if needbe so seems a bit arbitrary

Did you read all 175 posts. I don't think so.

Yes, 175 is enough. As some become intelligible, due to chains of previous posts been joined together.

For some threads, one is enough. 175 does seem random though.

Must admit, I never really understood the 'thread closed, got too long' thing.

Cant be to save server space as generally a new thread gers started and 'more' space gets taken up.

Yes threads get long and maybe annoying to scroll through but thats just a ysers choice?

Maybe someone can explain?

Other forums I've used have much bigger limits. Mumsnet is 1000 for example.

The good thing is it seems to stop the argumentative bores at least for that topic, saying that they do then pop up on other topics and just drag the conversation down again

I agree.

IMO

100 is enough.

"Is 175 posts a suitable limit?"

I cannot think of a thread which didn’t get totally pointless after a few dozen posts let alone 175. 🤣

At least in the pub you can tell the bore to fuck off and they usually do. Pity that's not the case on the Internet- I'd be happy to have a complete block including forum posts when you block someone, the theead might not make sense but at least it would block out the tits

It wouldn't help. Others would still quote the tits.

I'd like to have the opportunity of deleting a complete thread I started if it gets out of hand.

Only frustrating thing is you go to reply to a post but find it has closed.

"

It can depend on how they are charged for their hosting. Yes storage space costs money, so it depends how long they keep a thread for when it is closed before deleting it. But they may also be charged for traffic (data back and forth between the server and each user), so the longer a thread gets the more traffic gets transferred so you can just scroll to the end to read the latest posts. By closing the thread this limits the traffic, so if a follow on thread is started it reduces the traffic.

While these costs may seem trivial per gigabyte or gigabit (storage and traffic) when you multiply them up over the number of users they do become significant (especially when a lot of users are non-paying users).

"Imagine; only one word game"

No need to imagine, it is one continuous word game in effect - spanning 276 editions with over 48,000 words played, that's almost enough material to write a feisty graphic novel! 😅

I wonder what the most common word is that crops up on them?

You have to stop somewhere though it seems a bit of an arbitrary choice.

Heavy moderation of off-topic posts could allow the limit to be cut by half. Also stopping full quotation of the post you are replying to would reduce the clutter. Perhaps a link rather than a quotation?

Winds me up when people use the quote function to address a particular comment but quote the entire already-quoted string of posts so their reply makes no sense. Apply a little effort!

You need to be on 18months and paying member and not have negative posts, I believe
