I'm sure it goes back to pre biblical times, and probably almost to the first beings that could be described as human.

Pre-human. Homosexual behaviour has been observed in primates and other animals.

J expect the odd T-Rex may have been partial to some dinosaur cock.

The ancient Greeks were definitely open about it. The Romans weren't particularly shy about man on man fun..

Under Emperor Justinian I (Byzantine Empire, 6th century), homosexual acts were officially criminalized, linking them to divine punishment (e.g., earthquakes, plagues).

Probably from before 500BC - Leviticus prescribes the death penalty. The Assyrians may have had the same idea.

It was a punishable offence during the medieval period. One of the accusations used against the Knights Templar when they were dissolved back in 1307.

The Sacred Band of Thebes--an army made up of 150 gay male couples--was 4th century B.C. Not sure when some miserable old prude wrote the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy but think it was well before then. Probably dates back to when early man discovered sex was fun as well as for procreation.

Same-sex relationships have been documented in human societies for around 4,400 years, but likely existed earlier in pre-human species.

Humans have been around for millions of years. No doubt homosexual sex between them has been around just as long. Probably also in pre-human species too. I'd wager daddy eukaryotes have been using little sissy eukaryotes for a few billion years.

Bum fun between consenting same sex adults isn't even on the same page of 'bad things' as say ... Murder.

Isn't it incredible that it was punished by, well ... Murder.

It's worth noting that in antiquity it was ok for masters to have sex with male sl@ves, often boys, it was about power more than anything else, sl@ves were seen as property not as people, this is what got Hadrian in a bit of trouble, he saw Antinous as a lover rather than a sl@ve and there's some debate as to whether Antinous's drowning in the Nile was actually an accident.

It's quite interesting when you delve into the history of gayness, it hasn't been that long since men actually wore trousers not saying they were cross dressers just an observation. X

That's not strictly true, humans have been wearing trousers in some form for thousands of years, it depended on climate, Roman soldiers wore trousers in the colder weather in northern and central Europe

Work/Play in London, live in Kent

There is a debate to be had about whether how far back being gay goes is a question about people doing things we call gay now or calling themselves gay.

The classicals in Greece and Rome were perfectly aware of same gender sexual activity. They would not have called it that of course. This use of gender less than a decade old in common usage.

Even in the first half of the 20th century there were more men who had sex with men who did things that they viewed as homosexual but did not consider themselves a homosexual person. This way of thinking is not rare even now.

While most men who have sex with men now consider themselves homosexual or bisexual or gay or bi it is now less common but still not rare to find as cock-appreciating straight man.

As such being a gay person is likely to have a short history but being a person who has gay sex is as old as time.
