If we went to war now would you sign up to defend our country??

Personally I wouldn’t hesitate and would more than happily give my life to defend my country

What’s everyone else’s opinion on this??

We have been at war (with someone) for most of my life.

With rare exceptions, in hindsight sight, these wars were not wise , and arguably completely unjustified in at least some cases.

So would I join up? The burden of proof needed by a government to make me think "this is needed" , is unusually high.

Moral considerations aside, would I join up if I were a young person today?

What's the cash offer? What's the risk? What happens after?

It's not great but it's a life.

I will have to kill or participate in killing people. I will cost the country money in excess of what I or my work contributes. I may get injured and it's min five years of my life "in service".

If I'm dealing , Im very unlikely to kill or hurt anyone.

I contribute more to the economy, and I'm probably free to work a second job, so I undoubtedly make a lot more cash with a small risk that I'll spend time inside but in any event almost certainly less than 5 years if all I'm doing is selling .

On that basis, unless I have this fantasy that by joining up I'm serving public interest, there are few good reasons for doing so unless I'm unemployable anywhere else?

In today's climate I think it would be beneficial for anyone who has strong moral convictions about defending the country to at least join something like the TA so that it is at least a viable option.

For most of us, going from keyboard warrior sat on the sofa at home to being a member of the armed forces at short notice is going to be a farce.

That’s pretty much what I meant ie if there was a serious threat to the the Uk

Ok not everyone would have military experience etc etc but they would train those people and tbf I can’t imagine many men or women had much military experience during the two world wars but they all played their part

None but a psycopath could say for certain whether they would be prepared to kill another human being in such a situation. Brave words in times of peace and the confidence that it's unlikely to ever happen.

The only way we can know is to wait until it actually happens, only then can we see if this is more than mere hot air and hubris.

As has already been mentioned, justification is a major issue. Given our recent history i wouldn't trust any British government nor it's military advisors to make that call.

The injustices of our involvement in Libya and Iraq and our complicity in Palestine highlight that fact.

I did way back in the autumn of 1976. Don't think I'd be much use to the army these days with all my health problems. If I thought it was a worthwhile war and this country in danger of being invaded I would still volunteer to do something of use although it would not be frontline fighting. Also have to consider very carefully if it was something Starmer caused.

I'd say no, because I don't think the modern battlefield is a place for amateurs like me.

I will add a caveat.

If it's fighting on home territory, like the Ukrainians, then yes.

You need to be able to control drones nowadays so geeky people who are good at computers are required. No bayonet weilding big strong men boot strapped and grenades at the ready. War! What is it good for ? Absolutely nothing.

So if it was a threat to the UK then it's obviously Russia or maybe China. So, that said, waste of time signing up,nuclear conflict would happen within days if not hours.

It really comes down to the reason why...

Would I lay my life down for a cause worthy of my life or the lives of all I hold dear?... I like to think I would.

Would go and kill and be killed because Stamer has brought in conscription that all men below a certain age must go and assist with the war in the Ukraine? ... Would I fuck

I would love to join up. I would be jumping into bed with others. Flirting with Sergeant. I would make sure I was a trollop.

Seriously don't think they would have me now as I am over 60. Not sure of cut off age.

I think the elder would be expected to be patrol wardens. Imagine knocking on someone's door and fining them for having a light on upstairs. If the resident was sexy male I would happily write fine off for a fumble in his pants.

Mind that’s true they would be disgusted with the way our country is now especially with our current sorry excuse of a government who are doing everything in their power to stop freedom of speech etc etc hell man we can’t even fly our flag without some sad individuals calling us Far Right.

Except ... Many of those flying flags ... Are ... Far right.

And there is nothing to say that ....our glorious forefathers ... Were not also racists.

But we can be better. And avoid the mistakes.

And choose not to be cannon fodder, or

unquestioning baby killers.

For example.

If only everyone would get on eh???

Imagine that 🤷🏻 the world would be a far better place to live but unfortunately it’s never going to happen as long as we are run by governments who are more interested in oil and money.

We live in very sad times indeed I’m just so so thankful I haven’t got kids!

"If we went to war now would you sign up to defend our country??

Personally I wouldn’t hesitate and would more than happily give my life to defend my country

What’s everyone else’s opinion on this??

Are you a member of the TA or any other type of reserve? If not, why not?

Well the OP is already past the age limit to sign up for the TA as a soldier. You have to apply BY the day before your 43rd birthday. There are higher limits for specialists such as Doctors etc.

To join the UK's Army Reserve, you generally need to be at least 17 years and 9 months old to apply, with the minimum age for joining being 18. For soldiers, the maximum age for enlistment is the day before your 43rd birthday. For officers, you must apply by the time you are 48 years and 9 months old and start your training before your 50th birthday. Ex-Regulars and Reserve rejoiners can have different age limits, up to 52 for soldiers and 57 for officers, but this can vary depending on the role and unit.

Note is says Reserves and NOT TA

The STABS went out decades ago "

STABS? Ahhh fuck off pal.
