Police and crime commissioners to be scrapped

Jump to newest

Waterlooville

Most of the commissioners have been members of the main political parties.

The police should be non political, so I belive it is a positive move.

Savings of £100 million will be made over this parliament term. That money will be spent on around 300 plus additional police officers, again a positive move.

Does any one know of anything good these commissioners have done in the last 13 year?

Why do a few bureaucrats cost the nation £100 million over the course of a parliamentary terms. Quite literally ... pigs with their noses in the trough!

Ironically, few if any of them have any professional policing experience. Most are ex/failed politicians.

One of the first things the Sussex commissioner did was commission herself a new office and

office furniture. She didn’t like the one she’d been given. Waste of space and I’m pleased they’re being scrapped.

Strange comment, given that the police and crime commissioner is a democratically elected position, one that you would have been able to vote in had you been bothered to do so.

I have to question the idea of democratically elected. Most had political parties backing then with election staff and funds, why would a political party do that, I think for political control of the police service. Which I maintain is fundamentally undemocratic.

Police must be non political.

First you have no knowledge of my voting history! I have voted in every election I have been eligible for, and I voted for the independent candidate.

Secondly you have not addressed my point about Police and crime commissioners, being democratic or non-democratic.

I therefore have every right to comment.

That's a fatuous argument. How do you vote if you don't want that 'representation'? If I don't vote, it's because I don't want any of the candidates.

It's immaterial whether it is parliamentary elections, Council elections, mayoral elections, police commissioners ... They are all out there to line their pockets, further their careers and serve their cronies. I won't dignify any of them by voting for them.

From the news reports, the “responsibility” will go back to either an elected mayor or the council - both of which are political (which is what it was before the PCC).

"Can you imagine how much that will cost in redundancy payments, not to mention ongoing pensions until death ???"

A mere drop in the ocean of council’s pensions bill. An average of a quarter of your council tax goes toward saving, some councils it’s over half.

"Can you imagine how much that will cost in redundancy payments?"

I believe the “plan” is to let them stay until the end of their “elected term”. If that is the case then there would (or should) be no “redundancy payment” as they have come to the end of a “fixed term contract” - they wouldn’t get a redundancy payment if they stood and lost in an election.

Our original PCC was Alun Michaels, this man firstly started out as an MP, he quit and became a member of the Welsh Assembly, he quit and become the PCC for south Wales

Three times he’s had his labour snout in the public purse. He finally retired at age 84 after having served 3 terms as PCC.

Biggest waste of money ever, he did absolutely fuck all, same as the other PCC’s. Thank goodness someone has the sense to scrap the entire system.

Always thought it a bit of a daft idea in the first place. Bound to be political and hardly anyone understood what it was all about. Local to me the first election for a P.C. Attracted a 21% turnout. Even the 2nd one didn't get that many votes even though it was the same day as a county council election. My old neighbour said she voted for a councillor but returned the commissioner ballot blank as she had no idea who to vote for.

Aparrently the election process is m£83 which sounded a lot until you realise the population of E&W less those with directly elected mayoralties. About £2 per resident so not expensive but still I agree a few more peelers on the prowl will be more benicial.

What's a policeman? Never seen one, although there is a building in Kings Lynn with about 20 cars parked in the carpark with blue lights and Police signs on them. That was mid afternoon on a Friday!

We have no crime here, because there is no-one to actually police our desperate community!

I doubt removing commissioners will make no more impact than since they were created.

Our previous commissioner, bless her heart, was incredibly 'handy.' In fact, she rarely even had to open envelopes for tenders as she could read them right through the paper!

She saved us a fortune on admin costs and totally justified the extra line item in the budget labeled 'Mystical Oversight and Pre-Emptive Compliance.' Which could pick the winner prior to any race even being announced.

Frankly, it was an incredibly efficient system... but ill never understand ehat tax code 'seeing the future' could be placed under.

It's the only vote I've spoiled. Years ago, when we voted for the first commissioners, I drew a line through the whole lot and wrote "this is a waste of money" across the paper. We have chief constables, are they not doing the same job? The only consolation was John Prescott failed to become commissioner for his part of Yorkshire (Hull) at the time.

Not really racist. Couldn't care less about someone's ethnic origins if they were up to the job. Mildly Islamophobic perhaps but Khan is his own worse enemy on that count. Politics and religion don't mix. The office of London Mayor has never been successful. Livingstone was a prat. Boris acted the clown which made me have doubts about his suitability to become PM. khan has been hopeless.

Possibly. I'm not sure. He's a bit of a controversial figure. I thought it very wrong of him to join the anti-Trump protests whatever anyone may think of Trump. Damaged the dignity of his office. I don't begrudge him his faith but he has made a big point of it when perhaps he should be more neutral in a multi-faith city.
