"Take a holiday to Golders Green or Stamford Hill" Golders Green is a couple of miles from me and as you suggest, very Jewish. I live in Finchley which has the highest concentration of Iranian people in the UK. I know a number of people from both communities who happily co-exist, just normal everyday people like everyone else.

That's different then, and pretty daft.

Jewish is not a race, if one is Jewish or a Jew the assumption is that one follows Judaism.

According to a 2001 survey by City University of New York, 49% of all American Jews identify as being secular while 22% of American Jews as of 2013 identify as having no religion Characteristics of a secular Jew: Cultural and national identity: They see their Jewish identity as cultural or national, separate from religious practice. Relationship to religious observance: They may celebrate holidays like Hanukkah or Passover as important family and cultural rituals, even without religious belief. Separation of religion and state: Many secular Jews support the separation of church and state and advocate for civil marriages and public transportation on Shabbat. Modern values: They often embrace modernity and align with individual freedom, democracy, and Western liberal ideals.

"Go to Turkey and you will see hundreds of muslims smoking, drinking and even knock you up a nice fry up or a bacon butty. They actually have a pork shop in a resort near where we stay." Turkey has become quite secular over the last 100 years, since the fall of the Ottoman Empire and then the rise of Attaturk. Also Turks like to distance themselves from Arabs (due to Arabs and the Brits working together to end the Ottoman Empire), but yeah in most tourist destinations in Turkey it’s a lot more secular and people will drink (me included), and not really follow Islam. There are still places in Turkey that follow Islam more religiously however, just depends where you go Also you’re probably having turkey bacon instead of pork bacon, it’s difficult to get that there

"How Jewish?" what's the measurable scale? Surely it's that you are either Jewish, or not. Or is there some factor whereby one can be semi-jew? Quasi-jew? Wouldn't that be circumspect?

But traditionally, I gather, you're not a proper Jew unless your mother is, and mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother. That said, there are several other lines of enquiry, and a lot of uncertainty and argument, (as is routine among Jewish scholars). Ethiopian and Indian Jews may well be only slightly related to the baseline Sephardim and diaspora Ashkenazim.

As a whole Jews are far too diverse to be considered a race any more than Muslims or Christians can. A significant percentage of the population has little or no DNA that might be classed as Jewish whatsoever, being the descendants of converts. Equally i'm sure many people have 'Jewish DNA' that are about as far as it's possible to get from being seen as one, maybe even myself. It means nothing. I find it odd that some would still cling so vehemently to this outmoded and disproven way of thinking.

"Ethnicity" depends on what you believe you are, regardless of whether you are or not, so it's subjective. What I'm talking about is the objective commonality between people who claim to be separate from others. Cf, frequent claims to be "God's chosen" Whom did God choose for His special favour, and on what basis? And why is the religion almost impermeable for those whose mothers were not Jews? PS I lived next to a rabbi for a bit...

I'm not sure that the Jewish god (the same god that spawned jesus and then killed himself, and the god of islam), would be very happy about Jewish people not following his law.

" Agree with you The word of God according to all Abrahamic religions is that homosexuality is a sin, and usually one of the ‘major sins’. My family come from a Muslim background, no one in my family is religious, and because I’m gay, it contradicts with a lot of Islam so I don’t consider myself Muslim. You cannot be gay and Muslim, Jew, Christian at the same time.
