Off the back of the recent 'What car do you own' thread.

Ford Capri Mk3 back in the 80's.

Bright red and a bit of a babe magnet (straight back then).

Reclinig seats and loads of interior room for manoeuvres.

I’ve had some reasonable cars over the years but the one that immediately sprang to mind was a rank outsider, an original Ford Ka. Ugly as fuck, really basic but for some reason really fun to drive, like a go kart. Amazing handling in the snow too.

After that, probably the Ford Focus CC. Loved driven in summer with the top down plus a cavernous boot.

After a big promotion and a hefty bonus I decided to treat myself to a Puma Black 1.7i - the one in the 90/00s based on the Fiesta chassis back then.

What a fantastic fun little car that was.

Broke my heart to part with it several years later.

Favourite one owned was a Sierra 1.8LX. Basic as fuck, no PAS, no ABS, rear wheel drive with a big lump of a bulletproof CVH engine that took tons of abuse and kept going. Fast enough and tail-happy enough to keep your driving honest.

Favourite I had the use of was an Omega 2.5 V6 estate. Comfortable express train of a car I had up to 140 in Belgium once.

Best car I ever had was an 850cc Reliant Robin GBS.

Took delivery of it with 9 miles on the clock, owned it for 2 years & 10 months, and traded it back in with 98500 on the clock.

Its still on the DVLA system, its never been taxed, it has never been tested according to the records since I let it go, it was a limited edition, wish I still had it to be honest.

It never got bogged down in snow, I named it "The flying pig",haha, had it across the windscreen on a self adhesive sun strip. my mate had a standard Robin, in an awful brown colour and we named his "The flying shite".

I was 22 then, hell, where did the years go ???????

It’s got to be the 2nd generation Honda civic that was my first car.

I’ve had many cars since, including brand new ones and prestige ones, but none gave me the feeling that one did.

It was an old, shit car, but it gave me a freedom I’d never had before.

Took me to coasts and countrysides that I’d only ever heard of.

Best £30 I ever spent!!

I think my favourite was an '89 FIAT Sisley Panda 4x4. The previous owner had raised it and put off roads tyres on it, with bull bars front and rear, even the spare tyre mounted on the back. Some very interesting & varied vehicles on here. My favourites are a 1960s Saab 96 (2 stroke!), a 1970ish Renault 16 (Car of the Year 1966) and a recently sold & regretted Mk7 Golf. Possibly the best was a Honda CRV (first edition) that we did 168,000 miles in.

Basic model

But I absolutely loved it

Had some good memories in it also..and not just the sex

We had a Toyota Townace (Jap import 8-seater) that got a lot of family miles and good times put on it. Deadly unreliable due to relying on a fragile viscous-coupled fan for cooling the mid-mounted engine (literally mid, it was between the driver and passenger seats). Every time it got hot, the head gasket would go. Sometimes felt like it spent more time being fixed than on the road, but it did have dual-zone aircon, curtains and a nifty little box for grub that could be a fridge (handy for a sneaky G&T with ice on camping trips) or a hotbox for keeping yer chips warm on way back from the takeaway.

One head-gasket sabbatical (that ended up being a bloody expensive complete engine replacement from a broken Camry) we bought a cheap FX4 London taxi to keep the four-kid school shuttle going. That got some looks. It also a shockingly bad Landrover 2.5 diesel that fell to bits on a regular basis.

Interesting looking up these older models of cars - I was driving on the dual carriageway recently and saw one of these older models and it was about half the size of the modern, ordinary family hatchbacks, and yet we would still fit 5 people in the car to go on journeys.

They were/are such fun cars. I had three in total.I wish I had kept them. They are worth good money now. I always wanted a Cabriolet one, but unfortunately never had the pleasure. It is the whistling sound they make that i also love. Good memories 🙂 I'm not keen on the modern ones. To me a proper Beetle is aircooled with the engine in the rear 🙂

E39 BMW 525 SE petrol. It had every possible option. Seriously fast, never cost me much in maintenance. Even at 15 years old it was immaculate, everything worked like new and was still as tight as a drum , had a full BMW service history when I bought it. Then some fucker ran into it (parked) and wrote it off. I still miss that car

Most expensive I have ever owned, fastest, most towing grunt, most comfortable to sit in or drive.

Vw Touareg 3ltr V6 (286).

Never missed a beat, ever!

Brakes were shockingly expensive, tyres weren't too bad given thru size.

Real motorway cruiser.

Yeh doesn't have all the gimmicks others had for price but its quality was pretty dam good if it werent for retirement looming I'd have another!

1973 amc ambassador broughm station wagon, genuine 8 seats 360 cu inch (5.9 ltr) v8 18 ft long 6 ft wide, African import so was r/h drive, unusual for and American car...lovely car! downside was 14 mpg! really sad when I sold it, worth a bloody fortune now, if you can even find one! second favourite was my series 2(1978) jaguar v12 saloon 5.3 ltr, maxed it out on the A3 once 150 mph indicated (not me officer...lol) and the bloody thing was still accelerating! 10 mpg on a run! 8 mpg local milage but I bloody loved it!! again worth a lot of money now!

I’ve currently got a VW Tiguan 2.0 tdi 4motion and love it 👌

It’s a comfortable car to drive and cruises along easily on motorways so is ideal for long journeys it’s took me all around Scotland on a road trip and never missed a beat

Pretty quick off the mark too and you can hoy around the bends with full confidence due to its great handling

Great fuel economy as well and plenty space throughout

As with most lads in the 80’s-90’s I worked my way through the complete xr range from Ford and I was a big fan of the cavalier Sri’s my last being the 130 before I moved on to a calibra then Carlton gsi

Eventually going onto Volvo t5r then e34 bmw525 the e36 328 eventually the m3

And many many more quality cars between then and now

But I actually had this conversation news years eve

My true love will always be with my mk1 xr2 ( my 1st true hot hatch!)

But by god do I wish I still owned each and every single car I have previously owned!

I wouldn’t need to work for a living now that’s for sure !

Over the last few decades I've had BMWs, Audis, Merecedes, Jaguar and a Range Rover - but nothing compares to the sheer joy of my first car - a hand-me-down base model VW Polo, that was my mother's. 4 speed, rarely got over 70mph & didn't even have a cassette player (essential in the early 90s). It signalled growing up - I passed my test 3 weeks after my 17 birthday and I thought I was the coolest guy in town.

I had a Renault Megane convertible. Full top of the range sports pack leather all in jet black. I remember driving from Bedfordshire to Greenock in it and when I got out in Greenock to fill up it felt like I had just driven to the shops.

Such a good car. It threw a piston rod and died. The mechanic offered to get me a new engine but as it was the last year of that model any engine would have been older than the car. I hated it the day it went to the happy hunting ground.

Bought the bugger on eBay site unseen

plus you could at least repair older cars yourself, all you can do with modern ones is check the fluids! and tyres!! everything else needs a bloody computer!
