One of the most toxic phrases that exists is “Man Up” I seriously want to punch people in the face when I hear them say that. One of the biggest killers of men in the UK is suicide. Men are much less likely to speak to healthcare professionals and seek help when they are low. I have been there myself and when I finally broke down in the GPs room she was incredibly supportive and pointed out how many bottle it up because men are conditioned to be strong and just “Man Up” and that having admitted to having problems is the biggest step. I got the help I needed and after my experiences I became a mental health first aider to support others in finding the support they need. There is nothing macho about bottling things up and suffering in silence.
