What have people been watching lately?

I've seen most of the classics - Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire & Yellowstone etc. I recently discovered Mr Mercedes on Netflix, Stephen King's first detective novel. Season 1 is very good, two more to go.

The sex scenes are phenomenal but also integral to the fascinating story which is unlike anything I have seen before feel like I should buy the book and read it as well.

Currently re-doing stranger things to work up to series 5.

Like detectives? The chelsea detective and ludvig both worth a watch

Bit like Midsomer - small closely knit community populated by homicidal maniacs.

Fantastic clear-up rate, though: just as well the police force is on the ball.

i have a liking for police procedurals. i will be revisiting:

Happy Valley ... it's grim oop north

Line Of Duty ... "Jeezuz, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey!"

The Killing - the Swedish version, with Sarah Lund in the wooly pully.

Red Riding ... it was even grimmer oop north in the 70's

Engrenages - English title Spiral. French police drama series.

And dipping into some real nostalgia:

Inspector Morse.

Columbo.

I like the ones that actually have some accuracy, and Morse doesn't fall into that list. Focussing on detectives, NYPD Blue is one of the best ever.

"Red Riding was fucking brilliant. Grim for sure but good grim, I really loved how they got the 70s atmosphere so right, you could feel and smell it "

It has parallels with another series that i will have to turf out of the stack to revisit: "Our Friends In The North". That one was far more based on real-life events, which i believe caused quite a bit of apprehension among BBC lawyers.

Met Police corruption was in the news in the 70's, following the fallout from Operation Countryman and prosecutions of officers in the Obscene Publication squad. Both revealed collusion between criminals and corrupt police officers.

Malcolm McDowell plays a memorable role as a menacing Soho club owner and porn king, alongside Daniel Craig as a naive youngster who gets drawn into his web, only to be discarded when he crosses him.

You probably won't like the appearance of the psychic woman who has visions, then

Yes, there is a certain degree of fantasy in it. But I would suggest that much of the police behaviour - including a brutal interrogation to force a confession from an innocent, vulnerable young man - are not far removed from reality.
