Totally bonkers Royal Institution chemistry lecture here. For kids, but fun for all the family.

If anyone can tell me what the substance is to which he is playing the violin, I'll be very grateful

You’re almost certainly thinking of the piece of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide).

No.

Would have helped if I'd included thei link, wouldn't it? What a twat. Here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g8lANs6zpQ&list=PLDZMII7X3q7VNx_GTA5_Tw1BoHekRFGDd

At 10.55, he plays his violin at a mixture of 2 transparent fluids, which, after a delay, becomes dark and opaque. His explanation is suspect: it could be a simple clock reaction, and have nothing to do with the violin. So, what's going on?

I've never heard of this one.

Though fun, that lecture is pitched a bit young for the OP. Here's one which solves one of the biggest problems in maths - what the fuck an equation is really telling you. It's always been a stumbling block for me, once we get past basics. And I now have a better understanding...
