It could be the trees were affected with disease or, more likely, they heard men were touching other men's private parts and 'something must be done'. So all the lovely trees had to be sacrificed. That'll stop them.

Perhaps the trees were not native …. Or the area is being restored to a more natural heathland , meadow . Many wooded areas are relatively new features , man made additions to the landscape , that now are being returned to natures plan .
