He's a liar.

They already have a base there and if China or Russia go for it then its part of nato who will defend it which includes his troops.

He just wants the oil.

He also seems to have forgotten the russia is right next to alaska ffs.

He needs a military base in the North Atlantic as he jnows that is where Russia houses and coordinates their submarines. Greenland allows him to keep a foot innthe North Atlantic. Congress can't seem to contain him, and neither can his "allies" in NATO.

The 3 big dogs in the world are making lad grabs hand over fist. China taking the Philippines sea and moving its official borders to broaden its land mass, and the Taiwan issue. Russia taking Crimea and Ukraine, or trying to. Perhaps Trump now feels he wants to get in on the action.

International law has meant nothing since Bush and Blair defied the UN and went to Iraq. Pigeons cone hone to roost. I don't know how you put the genie back in tbe bottle because Europe is in no fit state to stand up to any of them

The nerve of him: justifying occupying a country to prevent China or Russia from doing the same is crazy. Presumably that's why he understands Putin starting to recreate the USSR. The man thinks he's playing a game of Risk with his mates Vlad and Kim.

We have to wake up to the truth. Human politicing is a criminal activity. Can anyone name a nation with an effective efficient and honest government? Switzerland, Norway, Sweden perhaps? Like to hear any suggestions

He doesn't need Greenland for any reason other than he wants what's under its soil to line his and his pals pockets. The rules are being changed, and the world is now a very dangerous place.

And the problem is if that bullet had hid his orange head as intended it wouldn't have made a lot of difference. That arse Vance is equally as dangerous!!

Vance is probably worse. I think that bullet hit exactly where it was meant to

Increasingly dangerous with no prospect of a roll-back.

He has a base in the north Atlantic, he actually has an airbase in Greenland. Its been there since ww2.

Even the president of Greenland said last week, we've always had a good relationship, if he wants more use of the land he only has to ask.

That isn't really true.

There's a great video on YouTube showing the rise and fall of empires throughout human history.

That's been the norm for thousands of years.

The last century is an exception.

Maybe we are reverting to mean.

Greenland is a vast country with a tiny population. It is self governing but shares a king with Denmark and also goes along with the Danish government for defence and foreign policy. All Trump basically had to do was negotiate with the Greenlandic and Danish government for more land and military bases and the 'problem' would be solved quickly and quietly.

It makes strategic sense for the US to have better access to Greenland militarily and for those pesky rare earth minerals. The Greenlanders don’t seem to be happy with the Danes and I believe elections are due soon. Independence from Denmark is certainly an issue.

The US has expanded through the purchase of territory before (Louisiana Purchase and Alaska)

I foresee an amicable resolution with the Greenlanders

This is why.

When the ice melts, huge mineral resources will be exposed: the known geology supports this. Trump's consistent policy has been to accelerate global warming, with the full cooperation of his chums in oil and coal.

Only connect...

By all accounts there’s a 1951 agreement between USA and Greenland in which the Americans can put as many soldiers in the country as they wish.

This isn’t just a trump thing it’s been going on a long long time

Sorry, forgot to mention that Trump is as thick as two short ones and is surrounded by yes-men. Not a lot of people know that...

Interesting, but little- reported point:

"On 17 January 1917, according to the Treaty of the Danish West Indies, the Danish government sold the islands to the United States for $25 million ($614 million in current prices) when the United States removed its objections to Denmark taking control of the whole of Greenland, and the U.S. and Denmark exchanged their respective treaty ratifications." (Wikipedia: Danish West Indies)

IOW, the US exchanged its notional claim to Greenland for the US Virgin Islands, as they became.

Perhaps Denmark could request the return of the USVI if the US steals Greenland?
