Im on my 5th bmw now and currently looking to replace with another bmw

Looking for a diesel bmw ! Get a big engine!don’t bother with anything under 2.5 I personally recommend 3ltr

Magnificent engine!

Must have very good service history lower miles the better and make sure the cam chain has been replaced before 100k

As with any used car it’s always gonna be a gamble

All models have there common niggles a quick forum check will give you a rough idea of the hot spots

Yes bmw parts are priced quite high when repairs are needed my advice is don’t try to skrimp and save as it will end up costing you more in the long run !

Good luck

What rubbish how many 25 year old Nissans do you see regularly on the roads then ?

Japanese cars are good for 100k miles on 10 years then there scrap !

As that’s what they are designed to do!

Proof is in the prices!

Compare a 10 year old German car against a Japanese car (if you can find 1 !)

As several online car enthusiasts suggest, use Car Vertical to check the details of any used car you are considering buying. Watch the videos of Mark McCann and Matt Armstrong on YouTube, these guys are car enthusiasts and still get caught out. Make sure you know what you’re buying, it’s very easy to be caught out

Fabled wife’s tale!

BMW parts are slightly more expensive than Ford parts granted

But the reason being is they are far more reliable!

As for garage rates they are the same whether it be a bmw or a Skoda! Makes absolutely no difference at all

Only someone with exceedingly daft expectations would take a 10 year old car back to a dealership!

I had a 13 yr old bmw 330 that was still on bmw insured warranty. It only ever went to the dealer for warranty work, anything the dealer identified as non warranty work it was taken to a local independent garage and 95% of the issues BMW raised were BS. The independent garage had no reason to refuse the work other than protecting their reputation so I trusted them more than the dealer who would invent faults to make money.

100% agree

Had similar issue when my own car went in for a recall

BMW were kind enough to even make a video and estimate the cost of the works that were dangerously in need of doing!

Strangely it had passed its mot 4 days prior to them making their claims!

Needless to say i didn’t give them authority to continue with the work they claimed my car needed

BMW can be a great car, but just make sure that you actually ‘need’ a diesel - as the 4 cylinder 20d engines can give bother if not taken on long runs regularly due to back pressure buildup. Automatic gearboxes also need their oils changing - make sure that has been done. If you buy well, with a looked after one, and continue to look after it - you should be fine!

BMW timing chains will cause problems if not changed by 100k miles as previously advised earlier, which means engine out on most models, as its situated between the dash and rear of the engine.

Do due diligence on all aspects of the car and its history, and you can do no more.

Happy hunting.

Oh and whatever make and model you choose check the majorservice intervalls for things like timing chains and belts etc.

Your better off paying a few quid more for a serviced car thats had them done, than a cheap one that needs them done

A car at 78,000 mikes due major maintenance, is worse than one at 86,000 with it done

My 330 was 130,000 miles and even BMW said the chain didn’t need touching and the dealer was never shy of trying to over charge.

Had many BMWs. Turbos on diesels can be expensive if they fail. A mechanic friend said buy at 3 years old sell at 7 years and generally get very good value. 3 series BMWs are great, comfortable, roomy and not ridiculously expensive. I'd avoid BMW dealerships for used and look at garages the offer some sort of warranty.

Statistically the F series (3 series) is the most reliable BMW and the N57 engine issue most reliable although that is the 3litre 6 cylinder diesel. Ignore the remarks about cars over 10 years old being unreliable and expensive to maintain. Just look at what’s out there driving around and judge for yourself!

My 2005 Accord was scrapped in 2024 (rust to expensive to fix). Never broke down once in 19 years, just servicing and wear and tear bits. BMW is the best of the "premium" German cars, with Merc and Audi, but I'd avoid all of them like a plague. Buy a used Lexus ES300, boring but will go forever.

Speaking from personal experience one of the worst cars I have owned was an Audi A4. It replaced an Audi 80 which was brilliant. It was 2 years old with 30,000 miles on it and had 3 repairs under warranty and then the engine management light came on and a friend who worked in the dealership told me get rid of it so it was replaced by a Mazda 6 which was brilliant and a better drive than the Audi.

Have a look at the Car Giant website. They're in Harlesden and have been in business for over 30 years, the biggest used car dealership in London.

They have around 500 vehicles in stock at any given time, most relatively new and very well priced. They have 37 BMW's in stock as I write.

Define “bargain”? What’s your budget and expectations? With BMW, it’s very model specific as is the configuration.

First question, why diesel? Unless you are doing very large annual mileages, with frequent (daily) long runs, it may not be the right choice.

Like a lot of manufacturers, BMW quality has taken a hit, especially as their cars become more complex. The fabled “German reliability” is now a myth. Some engines are better than others, but when they go wrong, and they do, the bills can disturbing. I wouldn’t buy anything without a detailed inspection and full history check.

I speak as both an enthusiast (I’ve had over 10!) and an ex-BMW employee. I now drive Japanese. If you’re looking for proven reliability, with quality, you need to look at Toyota / Lexus or Honda.

I totally agree with premium fuel

I used to use shell religiously but now I’ve moved over to bp

For those people who don’t know the benefits of the expensive premium fuel

I ask you to try it !

You will notice the difference

You engine will start easier

Will sound quieter

Will run much smoother

Your acceleration will be greatly improved

And you will gain extra miles per tank

Oh and don’t think what I’ve mentioned only work with performance vehicles!

It works the same on all vehicles! Petrol diesel cars vans motorbikes even lawn mowers!

Proof is in the pudding! Fill your tank 2-3 times with premium! Then when you empty fill up with standard fuel

That’s when you will see feel and know the difference

Unfortunately, I’d happily forget most of the recent non-electric Nissan products. The Juke, to use one example, is horrendously unreliable. Quality dropped with the Renault alliance, but their older models and Japan domestic Market (JDM) are good.

I wouldn't buy a BMW especially a diesel. most of them are full of plastic hears that fail at high mileage and only a few models are the quality that you use to get on the old 5 series E42.

Now I am retired I wanted to save money so I bought a older Kia Rio 1.2, £35 a year tax, 50MPG on motorway 40 around town, cheaper insurance and no cam belt, let alone a wet one. I can't justify the expense as I don't do the mileage now I am not working.

When I replaced my last bmw I was genuinely looking for a e or c class estate

I can 100% say there wasn’t a car for sale that I looked at that didn’t need something doing to it (and that was from dealers and private) and it wasn’t about cost or price because the bmw I bought eventually was £4K dearer than what i originally planned to spend! And I was looking for best part of a year and at least 3-4 every few weeks when they became available! I wasn’t looking for perfection but when you spend £20k+ on a prestige car you do expect a level of quality which I just didn’t find with any merc i tested

I’m not say mb are bad ! I’m saying i don’t think their build quality is as good as bmw !

What a pathetic statement

How about you apply you logic to everything else in your home?

Perhaps you want to go live in china ?

Or European country where most cheap stuff is made or the clothes you wear

Most of the parts that make up British cars are produced in different countries!

And then assembled here

For instance the wiring loom on a Range Rover was made in Ukrain until the recent war !! Etc…. We won’t mention the pattern parts that flood the British spares market all of which are bought cheaply from foreign suppliers!!

Tell us all which British car you own ?

And whilst your at it tell how unbelievably reliable it is and how cheap all the repairs are ??

I would make sure it had a full service history at reputable garages, preferably BMW specialists, and a sensible number of owners for its age. Check its MOT history with DVLA and look at fails and advisories. A BMW is a complex car and can be expensive to own if you aren’t careful, so choose carefully or it might not be a bargain.
