OK #1 don't stress.
Quick questions;
Did you, in the 48 hours before your test: have any kind of anal sex / toy?
Did you ejaculate?
Do any kind of exercise / work that raised your heartrate to the point of being even slightly out of breath?
If the answer to any of these is yes, then the reading can be abnormally elevated and the test needs to be redone.
Aside from the big C, there's several things that can elevate your PSA; inflammation, infection, enlarged prostate.
Of these, inflammation is incredibly common after you've recently engaged in anal play. Infection's fairly common, enlarged prostate is VERY common. If hypothetically speaking you had an enlarged prostate you're at no higher risk of cancer than if you didn't have one. It's thought that its caused by hormonal changes as we age.
To answer your question - Likely next steps include repeat PSA test at some point, digital rectal examination, e.g. finger up the bum, urine tests, ultrasound scan, maybe even some kind of imaging such as CT / MRI scans, though I doubt it at this stage.
I don't think at this point there's any benefit in thinking about things like biopsies.
While I appreciate that getting this result has surprised you I've got to emphasise that at the moment all that's happened is that you've had an abnormal result on a blood test that can indicate that there *may* be something that requires further investigation. While it's easier to say than to do, your best approach right now is to not stress about it, listen to your GP, Nurses, etc and follow through with any next steps such as testing that they recommend. |
