Royal Mail failed to deliver a “next day guaranteed delivery” letter I sent. So the compensation was…… a book of first class stamps. Cost them next to nothing and pretty useless to me.

Passport prices should have come down after Brexit, because prior to that we had free access to most of Europe. So it’s not as valuable.

"Use e mail

In this electronic age it is amazing how many firms you cannot contact by email. Very often you get an email with a 'no reply' address. Although I, like so many people these days, do online banking I cannot change my house address [moved late last year] online or via email. Same with a few other companies. It's either phone them, and sit there for 40 minutes listening to some corny music whilst an automated voice every so often says "Thank you for waiting. Your call is important to us. Please hold"; or send a letter via snail mail.

The NHS is probably one of the worst offenders - the amount of money wasted sending out letter appointments and then another letter saying it has had to be changed, or sending letters to your GP…. where they then scan it into your records to make it a digital record on the NHS ap. Why not email it to the GP in the first place?

So you put your letters in the post box in London this morning and someone get it in Edingbough tomorrow morning and it only costs 1.70.

I know historically it seems a lot of money but what else can you buy for that amount of money.

The carbon footprint of a stamp compared to an email. I wonder who would win that?

Most documents can be electronically signed.

Printing documents is mostly unnecessary and is a waste of paper. Think of the trees saved.

Well when it's sold to the guy currently buying lunch for the relevant ministers then most of the price increases and reduction in service will have been agreed , so all he needs to do is lay off workers , contract casual labour and you £3 a delivery, four days a week will be seen as reasonable way to extract millions in profit.

I rarely use the post but there is little (if any) difference between 1st & 2nd class post. It all goes into the same sorting system.

A friend has worked in the sorting office. They try to prioritise business post & brown envelopes. But no guarantees.

There is a old post box near me with separate 1st & 2nd class post boxes on. I've seen the post collectors put it all in the same sack.

Royal Mail has been beset with problems due to unionisation

It’s a changed world

Letters are rapidly becoming a thing of the past and Roysl Mail is trying to compete with the newer and huge mainly parcel delivery services

But Postal workers will not alter working practices to accommodate the changes

So they don’t appreciate that it’s their jobs they’re killing

We are sure we only get post three days a week now. Minor case in point I subscribe to Private Eye. Comes out fortnightly. Published on Tuesday. Used to get it by Friday. Now, it appears with less than a week to the new one. Big deal, I suppose, but it shows the slippage.

Our local postie used to be a grumpy, no eye contact fellow, but since we helped him out with an issue related to our block he has become more chatty. He says the trouble is here today, gone tomorrow agency temps and rampant mismanagement on things like rotas and overtime.

But what a system. "We're losing money as people aren't posting as much... Whadddawedo? Stick the prices up!! Yay! Brilliant, trebles all round...." Two months later "Oh. Didn't work. Volume dropped again. Folk are saying it's too expensive now. Whadddawe do? I know! Put the prices up AGAIN! Genius!"

We now have the most expensive gas, electricity, water and postage in Europe. Whoopedy do.

That there London, mostly

There will be a new set of Pantone 300 stamps issued - the King’s head on a particular blue background. It will be used only by NHS organisations and will be automatically sorted before First Classes.

This is apparently as the delay in post has meant appointments sent more than three days in advance get there two or three days later.

I like the increased efficiency (and that it will help my Did-Not-Attend rate drop below 7% in the outpatients department I supervise) but I do worry that other important mail will be necessarily deprioritised and that anyone can see who is getting a doctor’s letter.

Letters are rapidly becoming a thing of the past and Royal Mail is trying to compete with the newer and huge mainly parcel delivery services

"

But thanks to the Selfservatives, Royal Mail has to compete with one hand tied behind its back.

None of the newer delivery services are obliged to offer a universal price. They can cream off the profitable business leaving Royal Mail saddled with the universal postal service.

It would have been a different story if the newer services were also obliged to offer a universal price.
