So what songs have personal meaning or hit a nerve with you?

Mine is Small Town Boy, that really hit me when it came out, it was literally describing me and how I was feeling back then and how i felt for a long time after, it still brings tears to my eyes.

This might read like a fucking Reform supporter post but bear with me (it isn't)...

Oh England My Lionheart by Kate Bush.

So I was driving down the M50 for work this one time, shitty winter

day with clouds and wind and rain, and this came on the radio, coincidentally with the clouds suddenly clearing and a massive shaft of sunlight illuminating a little church on a hill overlooking the motorway, and a rainbow forming.

For those few seconds the combination of the lyric and song, the green and pleasant land imagery unfolding before me, made me feel an amazingly intense and hallucinogenic sense of connection to this land and its history and the essence of what it is to be a fortunate native of the sceptred isle blah blah. I was barely holding it together in the van, huge tears welling up, and totally swept away with emotion.

It was like a mushroom trip, the same ecstatic feeling of connection and belonging and oneness with a landscape and a feeling. But I hadn't taken shrooms in over 30 years.

Another would the Years and Years performance of King at Glastonbury 2022 (I wasn't there, just watched the TV coverage, but wish I had been).

Olly's speech about standing on the shoulders of gay giants (he didn't use that phrase but it was the sense of what he was saying) was incredibly moving, his sheer joy at being able to fully express his entire self on the world's biggest stage changed something inside me. Which is a bit fucking weird for a middle aged old fart

Alone again naturally Gilbert O'Sullivan

Although it was released in the early seventies and by then I was happily married it took me back to a time in my early teens (and still does)when ever I here it.A time when iwas homeless alone sleeping rough and contemplating suicide. X

Cloudbusting (Kate again) is my ultimate emotion song though. I can literally tear up even if it comes on the radio in the office at work. I have to stop what I'm doing and just listen every time I hear it.

It's partly the sound of it, the sheer beauty of the tune, the hard edged and gutty strings arrangement and the ecstatic climax of the yeah-oh-yeah-yays at the end. But also the lyrical content about Peter Reich (your son's coming out) and his father's doomed struggle with the US legal system and the strangeness of his ideas.

All in four minutes or so of incredibly off the wall pop music. But you just know that something good is gonna happen.

That's a good song, he had a knack for writing songs that would relate to ordinarily people

Agree with Smalltown Boy I’d just moved to Brighton. All my friends seemed to arrive by train from their home towns and find “the love that you need”.

More recently it was Don’t give up Kate Bush/ Peter Gabriel.

My husband and me were watching a comedy show and two of the main characters sang this. We held hands very tightly. I can’t listen to it again just yet.

You've got a lot of nerve to say I am your friend. Most caustic opening line ever. It's a great song.

A friend of mine once walked off a disused railway bridge and at his funeral they played ‘Close to Me’ by The Cure. I hate that fucking song even now. All I could think was ‘he won’t get any O levels’

Odd choice of Cocaine Supernova. Everybody with even a morsel of good taste knows Supersonic is the only genuinely good song Noel ever wrote in his life.

Leaving On A Jet Plane, it was one of my mum’s favourite songs, she played the 45 of it a lot .

I’ve learned it on the acoustic now, play it regularly and it always makes me think of mum.

I recommend listening to it while watching a sunrise. It's a wonderful, uplifting way to start a day.
