Sadly I do and the unwarranted abuse I received from a seriously sadistic headmaster in primary school when I lived in Northampton, set of a pattern of anxiety , fear and depression that has plagued me on and off ever since. It ruined my childhood and education. The Headmaster was not alone in his abuse of children as I encountered the same by various PE masters over the years . But Mr H and the memories I have of him , will never leave me.

At an all boys school and we accepted corporal punishment as a part of discipline.

We had one teacher who would use a plimsole and another would use a cane. It was either across the palm or backside.

The teacher who used a cane would whack again if you flinched your hand. At the end of the year after avoiding the cane he gave anyone two whacks across the palm as a reminder.

Every teacher at every school I went to in Glasgow in the 40s and 50s had a leather strap and belted kids’ hands with it every day (and some secondary teachers did it in secondary until maybe S4) I first got belted in the Infant class! Most often 2 hard lashes, often one on each hands but 3 and 4 were common. In my experience, 6 were very rarely given but I believe there were plenty of teachers who regularly gave 6 as a matter of course.
